Let’s look at how to avoid tipping our hand as private investigators and even a side benefit that allows us to use “noise” as a counter measure.
Tip Number One: If you go into a small county to pull records from the courthouse, you may worry that the Clerk of Courts may know the subject of your investigation or background check.
One thing that will mitigate this problem is to request the documents on a couple or few random people. This means no body will know the real subject of your investigation and even if the subject learns that “someone” pulled court records on them, it will seem like he was just one of many people and not the lone subject of your investigation.
Tip Number Two: If you think someone is going through the documents in or on your desk (or if you think someone is going through your trash!), take those random files you pulled, circle a name of address on them and throw them away!
In the intelligence world this is known as creating “noise”. That means creating so much information for the “enemy” to sort through, he can’t tell what’s real or important.
If someone digs through your trash looking for secrets about you, they will have to spend time, energy and money to try to figure out why you care about this random person. Of course, all that is wasted because you have no connection or interest in that person at all!
