For years I’ve been saying, “If you’re an investigator, you have to leave your office. You can’t just rely on computer work. You can’t just rely on the telephone. You have to get up off your rear end and go out into the real world and actually do investigating. Hey, private investigator, do some investigating!”
The information is not all online and it’s not all easy to get!
Reporter, Jason Meisner, with the Chicago Tribune earlier this year, published a story about exactly what I’ve been saying and his story reveals the existence of secret street files secretly held by the Chicago Police Department.
This is not unique to the Chicago Police Department. You’re going to find this everywhere and this is why I’ve been so adamant about it for years.
I’ve got a huge warning today for anyone who’s selling a car online and for those who think they have found a website where they can run a license plate trace without having a legitimate, permissible purpose.
What scammers do is go through online classified ads where cars are sold by owners. If the scammers can read the license plate number in the online photo of the car, they record the license plate number and contact information of the seller.
The license plate database scam relies on finding photos like the one shown here.
The photo above shows the type of ad the scammers are looking for. I redacted the license plate and some location data from the photo.
The scammers then place the information in their “online database of license plates”. It’s a small collection of plate numbers and associated addresses, but their goal is not to grow a large usable database.
What they do is contact the seller and tell them their license plate number, phone number and home address are listed in a database available to the public to run license plate checks, however there is a way to be removed from the database.
And here’s the shakedown… the person / victim who wants to be removed, can pay money (to cover the cost of modifying the database) and their private information will be removed.
So here’s how to protect yourself (and your clients)… Simply make sure if you have a car for sale online that the license plate is not visible in the online photos.
I want you and the people you care about to be safe.
Is this a message you should share with someone?

When you witness a crime and call the police, increases the odds of an arrest by getting the direction of travel the criminal(s) take as they flee the scene.
So many times this is missed, even by excellent witnesses to a crime.
But here’s the thing… knowing the direction the bad guys go significantly enhances the odds the police will catch them!
If you can say the criminal fled north from the scene of the crime, then no police officers have to waste their time searching south of the crime scene! This means any patrol officer who would have searched south can now search north.
This essentially DOUBLES the police response to your crime increasing the odds for an arrest!
When you use this tip, use it in a way that keeps you safe.
When you’re learning how to do surveillance, many teachers will give you vague advice, but this week’s advice is very specific and will save you from losing your subject when you’re waiting in your surveillance vehicle.
Be sure to understand that many surveillances you do will be in the morning. This is includes many Worker’s Compensation cases and maybe some cases when you need to locates assets of a subject who lost a judgment. (You follow the subject to his / her work place. Once you know where they work, the client who hired you can garnishee their wages.)
So when you work in the morning, be sure to be aware of school buses and prepare for them accordingly.
Anyways, this advise will really help you.
Committed to your success,
